Part of these coastal sections are now a legally “Local Protected Area”, intended to manage this important geoheritage in terms of geoconservation, geoeducation and geotourism. This tour along the coast will take us through this vibrant palaeontological area, showing places and environments where the main dinosaur remains were found, including several holotypes and also well-preserved eggs, now exposed in local museums, management strategies and different planned activities will be discussed, within the framework of the Local Protected Area development.

Field Trip C
  • Places to visit

    1. Óbidos
    2. Picoto
    3. Montejunto
    4. Maceira
Details

Diapirs are a prominent feature of the Oeste UNESCO Global Geopark. In the late xix century, Paul Choffat (a Swiss geologist) dedicated most of his professional life to the cartaography of the Portuguese territory. Looking at the Oeste region, he noticed the importance of the piercing diapirs, resulting from the uprise of Hettangian evaporites and clays, deforming the overlying Jurassic limestones. He also noticed the peculiar broad flat valleys related to the erosion and exhumation of those clays, surrounded by steep crests. He named this mor – phology as “Typhonic valleys”, after the Greek God Typhon, a powerful grisly monster, the son of Gaia and Tartarus. During this tour, we will walk on the path of Paul Choffat and look at the overwhelming effects of this “monster’s activity”, ranging from the internal deformation of the diapiric layers to the broad typhonic valleys and the uplift of small mountain chains around or above them.

thermal springs and spas

History and future of thermalism

Field Trip D
  • Places to visit

    1. Caldas da Rainha
    2. Vimeiro
    3. Cucos
Details

For centuries, the territory of Oeste UNESCO Global Geopark has been known for its thermal spa . At the initial stages of the Atlantic opening, shallow seas and lagoons accumulated thick evaporitic deposits all over western Portugal. Locally, due to the weight of the km-thick overlying layers, these deposits have been squeezed up to the surface. Deep underground circulation have been leading rainwater into these saltrich deposits and, after a few thousand years, brings them up again, at several thermal springs. These springs are known and used since Roman times. Warm and salt-rich waters are used for different health treatments, as well as for commercial bottling. This field trip will take us along the centennial thermal history and address the past and future of Thermalism at the Oeste Geopark.

Details

The Oeste UNESCO Global Geopark is a territory with many important palaeontological discoveries, particularly of Late Jurassic dinosaurs. The first findings date back as far as the early xix century and, since then, many important discoveries have been made. This tradition and scientific wealth has been cherished and developed by two local non-profit organizations, the GEAL (who manages the Museum of Lourinhã) and the Natural History Society (shn, Torres Vedras). More recently and due to the importance of the region’s fossil findings, Dino Parque (a thematic dinosaur/prehistoric life theme park) opened, a private collection of over 200 real-scale dinosaur and other prehistoric animal models, exposed in 25 acres of pine forest, complemented with a scientific exhibition and active fossil preparation and research Lab. This tour will offer a fantastic opportunity to see the importance of local palaeontological materials and institutions, especially in communicating science and supporting local development. There will be the possi – bility of visiting the palaeontological museum displays and collections in these three institutions, covering decades of fossil collecting and research. Guided tours will show us those rich collections, ongoing research, and how these institutions engage with local communities, bringing awareness to the importance of this heritage and as “schools” to both youngsters and professionals.

These conditions give unique characteristics to local wines, and are the birth of local brandy Aguardente doc Lourinhã. In this field trip, participants will experience the close relationship between these abiotic factors and the different kinds of grape varieties. There will be the opportunity to visit the National Archive of Vine Feet and Grapes (iniav), a repository of all national, but also international, vine varieties. fossils under our feet

Walking through urban Palaeontology

Field Trip M
  • Places to visit

    1. Fossil Urban Tour at Santa Cruz
Details

The beauty and meaning of fossils attract many visitors to the Oeste Geopark, especially when we are talking about dinosaurs. However, most fossils are archived or exhibited in local or national museums, whereas the visit to the original collecting places may be quite disappointing for common visitors, as the fossils are not there anymore. Urban palaeontology arises therefore as a very friendly and easy way of having a first contact with fossils within their lithological framework, even if those rocks are not at their true geological position. Walking through the narrow streets of Santa Cruz village, to look at the floor, traditional and new houses and monuments, and visiting the nearby Jurassic cliffs, will take us to discover and understand different groups of fossils, including ammonites, corals and shell beds, as well as the environments they lived in, millions of years ago.
